The Certificate of Graduate Studies in Autism is an online certificate of 12 credit hours that addresses the increasing demand for educators trained to work with autistic children entering the classroom. This coursework is ideal for anyone who is not a degree-seeking student and may also be pursued as part of the M.Ed. K-12 Special Education and Individualized programs.

  • Gain an overview of autism and how to identify and assess autism spectrum disorders.
  • Design and partially implement a behavioral and academic program as you learn methods of effectively teaching autistic students.
  • Complete a practicum project with an autistic student in which you will create an IEP and write a Present Level of Performance and Objectives.

This certificate may help advance your career in teaching and administration by equipping you as an expert in your field.

Note: this is a certificate and not an endorsement from the Virginia Department of Education.

Application Process – Autism Certificate

  1. Submit your online application. Please apply for Graduate level, then choose Online, Desired Program: Certificate of Graduate Studies in Education, Major: Autism Certificate. Indicate the term you want to begin the course and Part-time.

  2. Pay your $25 nonrefundable application fee by check or money order mailed to Regent University, Enrollment Support Services, 1000 Regent University Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23464.

  3. Provide your unofficial college transcripts. We require an official transcript indicating successful completion of a bachelor’s degree program. Regent has partnered with DocuSign to offer a secure, electronic way for your previous college transcripts to be delivered on your behalf once you have registered for your first semester.

If you have an unofficial copy of your college transcripts, please email those to apply@regent.edu using the subject line: EDU Certificate Application Pieces.

If you are an international student, or you earned college credit at non-US institutions, please submit your transcripts for a third-party course-by-course evaluation. Learn more and find recommended agencies.

  4. Complete your admissions questionnaire. In lieu of the previously required writing sample, please complete a brief admissions questionnaire based on your professional goals and interests. This should only take a few minutes to complete but please answer the questions completely and thoughtfully. This gives us a better opportunity to get to know you and align your objectives with our programs. Once completed, it will be sent directly to an admissions counselor who will be in touch with you right away to help complete the rest of your application.

“The Career Switcher program gave me the skills that I needed to feel comfortable stepping into my classroom and allowed for my success. I am now a first-year teacher who is thriving in an environment that applauds creativity and innovation.”

Breanna Mead, M.Ed., 2018 Career Switcher

“From the professors to advisors to support staff, my experience at Regent has been extremely satisfying, and I highly recommend the program to others.”

Lorri Wilke, M.Ed., 2012 NILD Educational Therapy

“One of my professors actually called me while I was in the program. That really opened up the door for me. Even though I'm doing this online, I still have a person and a face to talk to ... Just having those lines of communication is awesome.”

Rahni Jenkins, MA, 2016

“I was eager to fulfill a lifelong dream and make a career change to education. Regent's Career Switcher program allowed me to complete most of the training while still on active duty. I was hired immediately upon my retirement from the Air Force. Now a high school teacher, I can say without a doubt that the Career Switcher program set me up for success.”

Joe Sexton, M.Ed., 2012 Career Switcher

“The Virginia Beach City Public Schools cohort of ESL teachers in training was the perfect platform in which to study and learn. Upon completion of my last TESOL class, I was blessed with the opportunity to join the ESL staff of VBCPS. The amazing faculty of Regent's TESOL department helped make it possible.”

Altina Suber, M.Ed., 2015 Teacher
