The Certificate of Graduated Studies in Theatre Practices, offered online with required summer residency*, is designed for students seeking a broad overview in acting, directing, dramaturgy and design. Credits from this certificate may be applied to the master’s program.

  • Examine theories and concepts of acting and directing for the stage with an emphasis on Constantin Stanislavski’s system and on script analysis, principles of staging and collaborating with actors.
  • Investigate the process of creating a scenic, costume, lighting or audio design.
  • Gain expertise in designing and applying makeup techniques including corrective, fantasy, animal, special effects, old age and latex prosthetic pieces.

*THE 632 and 633 are required on campus in the summer.

This certificate may help advance your career in theatre arts by equipping you with a broad scope of knowledge in your field. Potential career fields include acting, stage production, public relations, voice over work and talent for commercial work.

Opportunity to gain expertise in designing and applying a variety of makeup techniques including: corrective, fantasy, animal, special effects, old age and will culminate in the introduction of latex prosthetic pieces. Student will be required to purchase a personal makeup kit.

An in-depth examination of a variety of theories and techniques of dramatic stage acting. Emphasis placed on Constantin Stanislavski’s system and the application of his theories and principles in exercises and performance presentations. This course may be taken for doctoral credit with approval.

An in-depth examination of a variety of theories and techniques for directing live performances for the stage. Emphasis placed on various principles, techniques, and approaches to directing dramatically effective presentations. The student will participate in classroom exercise work designed to prepare the student to apply what they learn in various types of performance presentations. Emphasis placed on script analysis, principles of staging, and collaborating with actors. Doctoral credit with approval.

Provides an intellectual analysis as well as practical and emotional perspective of the process of creating a scenic, costume, lighting or audio design. Emphasis is placed on script analysis, research methods, implementation and evaluation. Students investigate the impact of resources on the creation of a work of art.

Explores in depth the tools and techniques utilized by theatrical designers to bring their work to the stage. Students produce designs for creating scenery, costuming and lighting for a production.

2020-2021 Semester Check-In Deadlines:

All new students are expected to check-in for the semester 2 weeks prior to the session start date. Students should apply, be accepted, enroll in their first courses, and confirm a plan to pay for their courses prior to this date.

Prerequisites:

A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.50 on a 4.0 scale.

Step 1: Application

Submit your application using our Regent University Online Application.

Step 2: Application Fee

Pay the $50 nonrefundable application fee by check or money order mailed to Regent University, Enrollment Support Services, 1000 Regent University Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23464.

Step 3: Provide Your Unofficial College Transcripts

We require an official transcript indicating successful completion of a bachelor’s degree program. Regent has partnered with DocuSign to offer a secure, electronic way for your previous college transcripts to be delivered on your behalf once you have registered for your first semester.

If you have an unofficial copy of your college transcripts, please email those to apply@regent.edu using the subject line: SCA Certificate Application Pieces.

If you are an international student, or you earned college credit at non-US institutions, please submit your transcripts for a third-party course-by-course evaluation. Learn more and find recommended agencies.

Step 4: Complete Your Admissions Questionnaire

Please complete a brief admissions questionnaire based on your professional goals and interests, and provide thoughtful and thorough responses. This will give us a better opportunity to get to know you and see how your objectives align with our programs.
