Regent Royals Cheerleaders Take 2nd Place at the 2018 CCA National Competition

By Aubrea Shakleford

The Regent Royals Cheerleaders made their impressive debut at the 2018 Christian Cheerleaders of America (CCA) National Competition in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where they placed second. This achievement, while monumental on its own for the squad and for the university, is amplified considering the squad’s humble beginnings.

The squad knows what it’s like to build a program from the ground up. With only half the squad having previous cheerleading experience, the team has worked exceptionally hard to cultivate a sense of unity in skill, teamwork and relationship.

Though it’s their first season, these determined individuals have overcome the challenges that come with limited practice facilities, loss of members and multiple injuries.

Head Coach Hannah Harden has seen it all. She is passionate about her team and has worked hard to foster an environment for growth. Here is her perspective on the squad’s achievement:

“My first thought at tryouts was ‘Wow!’ We had so many girls and guys that came out with passion and true potential, each one bringing a heart to learn and grow. This proved to me that cheerleading would have a very successful first year. I knew that this season would be challenging, but it also allowed me to go back to the basics and teach a squad that ranged in skill set from beginner to advanced. I am truly amazed at how far we have come since August!”

Coming in second place at the national level is a pretty huge feat, but the squad is only just beginning.

“I believe the future is very bright as we transition from being a club to an NCCAA athletic program,” said Harden. “We will be holding tryouts April 13 – 14 for the 2018-19 school year. We’ve had a lot of interest from potential incoming students about trying out for the team from all over the U.S. Regent is going to see an even more spirited team next year full of new faces. The goal is to showcase the Regent Cheerleading Team at two-to-three competitions next year!”

They’ve put on their crowns as Royals and have stepped into the spotlight for the very first time, and we could not be more proud of their passion, patience and persistence!
